Korn Links Unique Record Deal

From the Associated Press

Korn has signed a new deal with Britain's EMI Music that gives the record label a slice of the hard rockers' revenue from merchandising, touring, publishing and other ventures, the record label said Monday.

The deal goes beyond traditional record label-artist agreements, which typically focus on sales of recorded music and exclude the record company from cashing in on its artists' touring receipts, T-shirt sales or other business deals.

Under the terms of the contract, Korn and EMI have formed a joint venture to manage the group's DVD sales, music publishing, touring, merchandising and sponsorships, among other projects.

The band, which was previously signed to Sony-BMG's Epic label, will release albums under EMI's Virgin Records label.

Neither EMI nor the representatives of the band would discuss financial terms of the deal Monday. Korn was reportedly getting around $15 million upfront for the two-album deal, according to some published reports.

EMI signed singer Robbie Williams in 2002 to a similarly structured, six-album deal laden with sales targets and incentives that, if fulfilled, could reportedly earn Williams nearly $100 million.

Korn's follow-up to 2003's ``Take a Look in the Mirror'' is expected to be released later this year on EMI's Virgin Records.
